PGCertificate / PGDiploma / MA Higher Education Learning & Teaching

This course, which has professional recognition from both the UK <A HREF="http://www.ilt.ac.uk/">Institute
for Learning & Teaching</A> (ILT) and the <A HREF="http://www.nes.scot.nhs.uk/">National Health Service Education for
Scotland/Nursing and Midwifery Council</A>, is designed to meet the needs of
people who have started teaching in higher education or who intend to do so
in the future. It will also be relevant to those in related fields, such as
business training and further education. It moves from being a structured,
conventional distance learning to an online course which allows considerable
personal negotiation between student and tutor. It places a strong emphasis
on practical application. The course aims to enable participants to develop
the skills of examining best practice in higher education teaching in a
reflective and evaluative manner. In addition, it will contribute to the
development and promotion of the Scholarship of Teaching.

Curriculum
Postgraduate Certificate (PgCertHELT): The course consists of four, 15-credit
modules at Scottish Masters level.

- Principles of Teaching, Learning and Assessment;

- Teaching and Learning Methods;

- Assessment Methods;

- Observed Teaching and Reflective Practice.

The course covers Curriculum Development; Learner Support; Teaching/Learning
Methods (including the use of new technologies); Production of Instructional
Materials and Media; Assessment Methods; Observed Teaching and Reflective
Practice. Successful completion of the course will lead to the award of
Higher Education teaching certificate and full membership of the UK Institute
for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ILT).
Duration: 12 - 24 months

Postgraduate Diploma (PgDipHELT): This degree is an extension of the
Certificate, largely developed through four,
15-credit project based work in any aspect of teaching, learning and
assessment.
Duration: 24 - 36 months

Masters Degree (MAHELT): The masters degree is by research and/or
dissertation.
Duration: 36 - 48 months

The PgCert/PgDip/MA course is structured on a part-time basis and can be
accessed on a conventional Open and Distance Learning mode, the Accreditation
of Prior Learning (APL) Portfolio route and On-line delivery via the
university's <A HREF="http://campus.rgu.com/">Virtual Campus</A>. The <A HREF="http://campus.rgu.com/">RGU Virtual Campus</A>
already provides a
comprehensive infrastructure for distance-learning education. The campus
facilitates are designed to facilitate and enhance interaction between staff,
students and others. It also support course delivery, tutoring, and
discussions, whilst attempting to recreate the facilities to be found on a
traditional university campus. Facilities which can be found on the campus
include, a library and on-line resources, bookshop, coffee bar, meeting
rooms, community groups, etc. For course participants resident in or about
Aberdeen, support is provided within the Centre for the Enhancement of
Learning and Teaching (CELT) where tutors, computing hardware and relevant
software, media resources etc., are all readily available. In addition, the
distance-learning mode offers students interactive activities with staff at
the Robert Gordon University through the Virtual Campus or tele- or
video-conferencing facilities. For practising teachers in higher education,
support and mentoring are also provided within the workplace.

PC Requirements
Course participants enrolled on the Virtual Campus will be required to have
access to a computer (PC or MAC) which is capable of running Microsoft
Internet Explorer version 5 or greater. Netscape Navigator 4.7 is also
supported for PC users only. The participant's computer must also be able to
connect to the Internet (usually done through a modem and an Internet Service
Provider - ISP) and have at least 33.6 kbps modem connection (standard for
most modems). The following software are also required to fully access all
Virtual Campus facilities:

Eligibility
Entry to the course is restricted to teachers/lecturers employed in the
education sector at tertiary level and to relevant staff in other industries
with a current training responsibility and delivering training at the
tertiary level or its equivalent. In accordance with the University's policy
for the Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL/APEL), applicants who have
outstanding teaching experience at the tertiary level but do not possess the
academic qualification of a first degree will be considered on merit.

Career Opportunities
A qualification in higher education teaching is increasingly recognised as a
requirement for people either in, or intending to join university sector
employment. Membership of the <A HREF="http://www.ilt.ac.uk/">ILT</A> confirms this status.
