TC-8
Technical Committee on Automated Test Systems
and Instrumentation
of the IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society
Last updated 20-Feb-2006.
TC-8 Activities
The TC-8 committee has been, or can be, involved in the following activities:
- Developing, maintaining, and revising IEEE Standards,
Recommended Practices, and Guidelines in the area of
Automated Test Systems (ATS) and computer-controlled,
microcontroller-based instruments. See some ideas for new standards below.
- Making industry consortia standards into official IEEE
standards.
- Educating test & measurement professionals in these
standards and best practices.
- Organizing and running ATS technical sessions, panel
discussions, and workshops.
TC-8's activity in recent years has been limited to review and maintenance of
the three standards it maintains. At this point, TC-8 is essentially dormant
until called upon by the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) to review one of
the standards when its 5 year review cycle comes up. The IEEE-SA recognizes TC-8
as a standards development Sponsor Committee in the field of ATS.
If a group of engineering professionals or companies wants to develop an IEEE
standard related to ATS, then one option is to develop the standard through the
TC-8 committee. In recent years, there has been no serious action in this area.
Companies developing ATS technologies generally do not see a need for IEEE
standardization. In cases where some standardization across the industry is
needed, private consortia are often used.
TC-8 can do some interesting and beneficial things for the ATS industry and
profession if engineers will become members and volunteer some of their time and
enthusiasm. If you would like to become a member
of TC-8, please contact the chair.
The official charter of TC-8 is:
- To develop, promote and support standards in the field of
automated instrumentation, automated data capture and
analysis, and the intercommunication of intelligent
instruments and instrument controllers;
- To develop, promote, and support standards that define
codes and formats for command and data messages for
instrument systems and tools for the development of them;
- To maintain liaison with other groups and societies
working in the same or related areas including liaison
and support of international activities such as
undertaken by the IEC.
IEEE Standards Maintained
- 488.1-2003 Standard For Higher Performance Protocol for the Standard
Digital Interface for Programmable Instrumentation. To learn about the
long process we went through to revise this standard, visit the
P488.1 project website.
Since the revision, a correction has been posted as an
Errata sheet (click the link then scroll down and click "IEEE Std
488.1").
- 488.2-1992 Standard Codes, Formats, Protocols, and Common
Commands For Use With IEEE-488.1. Reaffirmed in 2004 without
changes except for a new
Errata sheet (click the link then scroll down and click "IEEE Std
488.2").
- 1174-2000 Standard Serial Interface for Programmable
Instrumentation. Due for reaffirmation in 2005, if anyone is
interested in leading an effort.
New Standards Development We Have Discussed
- Very high speed instrument control and data exchange
busses and protocols
- Automated Test Systems (ATS) data file and/or data exchange formats
- Time-stamping of data points for post-acquisition
synchronization of instruments
- ATS design guidelines on issues of grounding, cabling,
noise, and crosstalk
- Recommended user features and user interface of ATS
