5.0 Dinner Speaker

Jef Raskin, VP of Human Interaction at Telocity, was the speaker. He provided some interesting background and insight into the history of HID devices such as the mouse, and windows oriented interface. We also had an interesting demonstration of magnetic monopoles. This led into the main discussion.

His main topic was a discussion on Hermaphroditic Connectors. These are connector/cable interfaces that have the properties of not having a plug and receptacle relationship. Either end of a cable can connect to any plug. In addition, there is no orientation to the connector. You cannot plug the connector in the wrong way or upside down. One downside to this type of interface is the number of signal wires required. For an ‘n’ signal interface you need 2n-1 wires.

Dick Karpinsky volunteered to head a study group on Hermaphroditic Connectors. Jef volunteered the chapter from his book, "The Humane Interface" , as an introduction to this work.
