About the IEEE Rail Transit Vehicle Interface Standards Committee
RTVISC was formed in 1996 to provide a permanent and on-going process for developing rail transit standards, using the consensus standards process.  Standards are developed using the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) consensus procedures as administered by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).  At the five year mark, there were 19 working groups, participation of more than 300 professionals, nine standards issued, and eleven more standards in process.  The standards development activity has continued to grow, especially with the formation of an Overhead Contact System sub-committee and a Traction Power Substation sub-committee.  This project was originally funded by a grant from the Transit Cooperation Research Program.  Additional historical details may be found in their Research Results Digest, November 2001, Number 44.
