Provide leadership to IEEE Standards Department for
terms and definitions used in IEEE standards, in cooperation
with sponsors active in standards preparation.
Aid the sponsors to ensure consistency in use of terms
and definitions in IEEE standards by review of the
definitions clause in draft standards prior to submission
to the IEEE Standards Review Committee (RevCom).
-
Establish guidelines to be submitted
for IEEE-SA Standards Board approval, similar to the
metric policy. SCC 10 would recommend that prior to
ballot, sponsors or working group chairs would assert
that they complied with the guidelines by indicating
that they conducted a review of all definitions.
Sensitize/educate sponsors/working groups of the process.
-
Assist IEEE staff in updating IEEE
100.
Resolve conflicts in terms and definitions
used in IEEE documents. SCC 10 would assist staff
if there are issues that need to be clarified or there
is a need to reconcile differences.
Harmonize definitions with IEC vocabulary by providing
appropriate references as needed. SCC 10 would promote
harmonization of definitions with other electrotechnical
definitions by providing appropriate references as
needed (IEV, other international dictionaries, IEEE
definitions).
Identify deprecated terms (North American vs.
European or international terms).
Provide current information to all organizations
and sponsors working on IEEE standards. The sponsor,
however, is responsible for providing interpretations
for definitions. These interpretations would follow
the normal interpretation process.
Act as liaison to the IEEE Standards Board in
all matters relating to terms and definitions used
in IEEE standards.
-
PURPOSE
The main function of SCC 10 is to create a policy
for definitions and outline the role of working groups.
This policy would be provided to working groups who
submit new PARS.
