RE: Change to Moderated List

Stephen and all on the reflector list:

I whole-heartedly support Stephen's request for a moderated list. The past
week has been a chat line which should have for the most part been between
the persons engaged in that chat, not the entire reflector.

What is needed is discipline not to hit the "reply to all" button. Hit the
"reply" button only. If the email comes from a reflector list, then the
person responding has to type in the email address of the ONE person he/she
wants to get that message and delete the reflector address. That takes
discipline I know, but it will really make the system work. I get close to
a 100 emails a day and want to read them all, but cannot. Cutting down will
help focus in on those which I and all of us should read.

Thank you for considering this discipline and for your enthusiastic energy
being expended on this standards work. Now is the time to write draft text
so that we have specific proposals in front of us to review. That text for
example, should be sent to the appropriate task group reflector as it is for
all.

Good luck to us all in this important endeavor.

Subject: Change to Moderated List

The volume of E-MAIL on the stds-1583 list is causing some people to ask
that
their names be removed. While very pleased by the enthusiasm and
involvement
P1583 is receiving I do not want to loss contact with people who want to
participate but do not have the time to follow all the discussions.

So unless there is general disagreement I propose to change the main list,
stds-1583, to a moderated list. This will mean that, once effected, this
list will be used only for items that require the entire committee's
attention. Generally that will mean meeting notices, posting of major items
to the Web site, creation of new task groups and other major events. All
deliberation and discussion will take place in the task groups. In this way
members can follow the work of the committee and join the deliberations and
debate on separate lists as they have interest and the time to do so.

I hope that change will best serve the needs of the entire membership and
thank everyone for their participation and enthusiasm for this project.

Best Regards,

Stephen
