GENERAL INFORMATION
On June 4-5, 2002 the Georgia Tech Research Institute is hosting the second
workshop on the Future of Voting Technology in a Networked Environment. Our
objective is to encourage collaboration among researchers and practitioners in
furthering research and development in the technical and social issues
surrounding the future of elections and voting.
As a follow-up to our workshop last November, we will continue with the
technical topics of systems architecture and usability. Our new social science
topic will be public election policies within the context of future voting
paradigms. Instead of presentations followed by Q&A, in this workshop we
will facilitate in-depth working groups. The goal will be to document the
group’s views on the strengths and weaknesses of alternative design concepts.
Topics
·
Systems Architecture: e.g., what are the
components of a complete Internet voting solution? How should they
interoperate? What existing technologies are appropriate? Where are technical
breakthroughs needed?
·
Usability Issues in Internet Voting: e.g., what innovative technologies
could be used to design and implement software interfaces to support ease of
use for all users? How do we deliver ballot design tools to ensure all ballots
are usable? What kinds of human factors testing of software and hardware can be
developed for future voting systems?
·
Public Election Policies within the Context of Future Voting Paradigms:
Re-examining current public election policies in light of future voting
technologies, specifically, provisional ballots, absentee voting, early voting,
remote voting, and redistricting.
