IEEE-SA Membership
Introduction To be an SPDC officer you must be an IEEE-SA member. As the SPDC operates at the individual level and not at the corporate level, only the individual membership details are given here.
Costs The IEEE financial year runs from 1 January through 31 December and the membership dues tend to increase each year. There are two ways of joining the IEEE-SA; IEEE-SA Only Membership (2008 dues: 203 $ US) or adding IEEE-SA membership to an existing IEEE membership (2008 IEEE dues: 130 $ US to 165 $ US (dependent on region, membership level and time period), 2008 IEEE-SA dues: 38 $ US). The most beneficial and financially attractive option is combined IEEE and IEEE-SA membership, particularly for those living outside the North American region.
Joining the IEEE The IEEE membership dues are dependent on region, membership level (professional or student) and period (full or half year). In addition, one can join various IEEE Societies (2008 full-year professional Power Engineering Society dues: 30 $ US) and the IEEE-SA (2008 dues: 38 $ US).
Joining the IEEE-SA An IEEE-SA membership can be added to an existing IEEE membership or non-IEEE members can join the IEEE-SA only.
Laboriously this has to be done using the IEEE Shop. Before doing any of this, get an IEEE Web Account. On the IEEE Shop page, sign-in using the “My Account” button. Once logged in click the “Membership” button, then “IEEE Standards Association” from the membership list page. The “IEEE Standards Association Individual Membership” item is then displayed (2008 Member and Affiliate Price: 38 $ US, Non-member Price: 203 $ US).
Now depending on your IEEE Web Account you will be charged the member or non-member price. Unfortunately for some people this isn’t a smart a system. IEEE members who pay their dues by cheque and don’t have their Web Account linked to their IEEE membership number are charged the non-member price!
Using the IEEE Shop The IEEE Shop Web site was refurbished in 3Q 2007. Unfortunately, even for a technically aware organization, the initial launch version suffers basic shortcomings. Users of non-Internet Explorer browsers, such as Firefox can experience sudden time-outs and messages like “It appears you are using Firefox. This site supports numerous Internet browsers on multiple platforms; however, it is best viewed with Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows. You are welcome to continue at this time, but if you have any difficulties, please contact us at: http://www.ieee.org/memberservices”
IEEE-SA Document Ballots IEEE-SA members can vote in any IEEE-SA document ballot. The non-IEEE-SA member 2007 per-ballot fee is 275 $ US.
