Participation

There are several levels of SPDC participation. These are listed in increasing levels of involvement.

IEEE stds-spd List

This is a broadcast e-mail list. By subscribing, you will receive SPDC news updates on meetings, projects, ballots and publications. The server will only distribute messages from the List Owner, so you will not be receiving discussion e-mails from List members. The IEEE Online Community has a tool for discussions.

IEEE Web Account

Having an IEEE Web Account is a prerequisite for the participation in many SPDC and IEEE activities. A Web Account is free and is obtained by completing the Web-based application form. You will then have an IEEE Web Account User Name and Password. IEEE members, who pay their dues via the Internet, will already have an IEEE Web Account linked to their IEEE membership number.

IEEE PES Surge Protective Devices Forum (needs a Web Account)

The IEEE PES Surge Protective Devices Forum is one of the IEEE Online Communities. Using your IEEE Web Account User Name and Password you can join Surge Protective Devices Forum. The password-protected Forum is a companion tool to the STDS-SPD Listserv Broadcast Mailer and this open IEEE-SA SPDC Grouper site. The Forum provides user interaction and the ability to post content.

This site is used for document development; reporting Working Group process, discussions and archiving. There are two levels of access; public and private. The private areas are only visible to authorized SPDC members. These private areas contain sensitive information like full draft standards.

myBallot(TM) (needs a Web Account)

myBallot™ is an electronic balloting system for standards review. Using your IEEE Web Account User Name and Password for login, you register with myBallot™ by setting your interest profile. When a standard matching your profile comes to ballot you will be informed by e-mail. Those who wish to join the Ballot Group just log-on to myBallot™ and enroll themselves in the balloting group. To participate in such a ballot you either have to be an IEEE-SA member or pay a 275 $ US single ballot participation fee.

IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) membership

Non-IEEE members can join the Standards Association. The 2008 dues are 205 $ US. IEEE members can add Standards Association membership for 38 $ US.

IEEE membership

The 2008 IEEE membership rate is 165 $ US for US residents. Being a member of the IEEE has many advantages such as:

- Access to timely information in the world of technology
- Networking opportunities - Societies, Section activities, and local chapters
- Career development
- IEEE e-mail alias reflector (yourname@ieee.org)
- IEEE Financial Advantage - discounts on life insurance, travel, credit cards, and more

IEEE Power Engineering Society (PES) membership

Adding membership of the PES in your IEEE membership application for 2008 costs an extra 30 $ US. For this you get the PES magazine (Power and Energy) and access to online publications.

IEEE Surge Protective Devices Committee (SPDC) membership

Participants in the SPDC standards creation process can be elected SPDC voting members if they meet the requirements given in the IEEE PES SPDC Organization and Procedure Manual. The only changes levied by the SPDC are meeting registration fees.
