RM: Hi, I'm writing if someone could refer to me any papers that
address issues related to automatically updating an ontology.
From my understanding, updating ontologies to reflect the
addition of new terms is undecidable in general. However,
I was told that automatic methods do exist for adding new
terms. If someone could point me to some papers on this
topic I would greatly appreciate it.

john sowa has recently cited some papers of his on this theme.
you might try posting your question also to the main suo list.

in a more general setting, the problem of concept development,
hypothesis evolution, idea formation, ontology generation, or
whatever you want to call it, falls into the problematic that
is often called "giving a rule to abduction", and even more
generally, the "method of inquiry", or "scientific method".
and thereby hangs many of our tales ...
