RE: SUO: Motion by Matthew West

Dear Eric,

You are correct.

What I am proposing is intended to be "a" canonical
upper ontology (minimal but sufficient) rather than
"the" upper ontology (legislated).

I accept that there are other view points than the
one we have taken (4D) and even that they may have
as much validity and be as or even more useful for
some purposes.

I believe that to make significant progress in
the understanding and development of
ontology in general we need to undertake
"comparative ontology" to examine and understand
the differences between different approaches and
gather evidence from practice of the consequences
of taking one approach or another - rather than
just shouting loudly "I'm right" or "prove that
I'm wrong".

I am hoping that the IFF work will provide a
framework for including and relating different
sorts of upper ontology. I would want to work
within that framework.

In the meantime we will have at least a catalogue
of in practice a reltaively limited number of
upper ontologies.
