Tom,
There was a time when I read a lot of Rorty.
But Rorty is not a pragmatist according to
the definition that I understand, and he
undermines both the utility of language
and the ethics of terminology by using
the word "pragmatism" the way he does.
Hardly an Original Sinn.
Twice in the last century, way before Rorty,
pragmatic thinking was made a straw effigy
by well-meaning supporters who were given
to certain forms of semi-baked semiotics
and excessive extrapolations. This made
it fool's play for Russell and his gang
to shoot down James, Dewey 1, 2 of 3,
and Morris, all the while steering
deftly away from the name that
they named as their source.
Those who do not read history are
doomed to view it as a revision.
