Dear Axamat - I have been on this list before and JS and I have been hissing at each other for a long time ;-) Because someone has been a 'guru' in one area does not automatically make them one in another. As I said, when innovation is required, working from a position of dogma will not help (especially when excluding current research areas into the subject)
In our current age, being a past 'guru' does not make you an eternal guru - these days there are no 'jobs for life' once you have a qualification - adopt/adapt is necessary many times WITHIN one's life - or else one becomes 'stale', out of date ;-)
