No need for such an abandonment. There IS a universal but it is VAGUE in expression since it has its roots in the realm of the non-verbal. Using it as a template allows for derivation of any LOCAL theory very quickly since all that can be known is contained as the set of potentials in the universal out of which are extracted the local.
To comprehend the universal one needs to go past the level of linguistics and on into the depths of our species that seeds linguistics - supplies the core categories. Formal KR works out of a limited context and in so doing has failed in understanding what is going on due to its specialisation!
All models, derived from basic distinctions A from NOT-A (a 1:many distinction, customisable to 1:1) can serve as a model of reality. The dichotomy of Angels/Demons has been widely used to create perspectives not fitting 'out there' but for many fitting 'in here'. The set of labels associated with the elements of that dichotomy will point to the same generic feelings as do the set derivable from recursing the XOR/AND dichotomy or the ANGER/FEAR dichotomy - each having a focus on dealing with context and the EXPLOIT/PROTECT dichotomy - with THAT dichotomy still untilising the same qualities as the others, it is the CONTEXT that elicits label creation and so derivation of DIFFERENCE (the uniqueness of the perspective, its unique lexicon etc) from SAMENESS (as in, what all perspectives share).
ANY theory will 'map' to the universal either as an actual (and so fit in well) or as potentials or mix of. The scope is wide enough, and genetic diversity wide enough, to generate meaning for some, and meaningless for others without education (and even with, can still elicit a sense of meaninglessness)
The universal, being a universal, does not care about context, be it sensory or social or 'in here' or 'out there' - these distinctions do not matter since they are LOCAL context-sensitive. What the local does is add 'colour' and so ground the universals. What HIERARCHY does is elicit 'inheritence' where universals as level Y are made up of 'universal' universals derived from level Y - 2 and more 'local' universals derived from Y - 1. Y will then be the EXPRESSION level of Y - 1 but also serve as the core categories nature for Y + 1.
Thus as Jung talks of archetype forms, these are extensions of the even more archetypal 'beneath' his structures - and those have their roots in generic feelings that work to elicit meaning. To focus on Mathematics, the ability to map something using geometry, algebra, arithmetic etc reflects the DIFFERENT expressions mapping the ONE 'something'. The FULL spectrum is in considering ALL expressions (e.g. In astronomy so radio astronomy complements visual astronomy).
Issues come about in the focus on precision where we find that the geometric, the realm of dimensions, has to be discretised, and so we move to the position of the point and the dimensionless, before we can get really accurate 'maps'.
We can detect these issues using our sensory systems where audition is more precise than vision BUT not as immediate as vision such that increase in bandwidth requires recruitment of as many senses as possible to set down information as 'universal'. That dynamic of recruitment, of distribution of labour, etc etc is covered at the level of our species-nature, the unconscious where categories have their origins in 'mindless' differentiating/integrating. Understand THAT level and all else follows - we are dealing with the realm used by all specialisations to 'ground' their speculations etc
Try to understand the 'all else follows' from the 'all else follows' context and you end up chasing your tail.
