But neurons survive. All successful life forms use neurons to communicate, reflecting the neuron's adaptation to the universe at a generic level of processing amplitudes, frequencies, wavelengths - differentiating/integrating. As such we have internalised the mindless, generic, information processing, of evolution.
More 'primitive' systems based on endocrine activity still make basic distinctions of whole/part etc so they too reflect adaptation to differentiating/integrating. IOW the METHODOLOGY of the neuron has been successful at the molecular/cellular level and developed 'upwards' over millions and millions of years and so enables us to continue but now with conscious selection rather than natural selection.
The brain of the zebra fish works, in general, in the same way as ours does in categorising data - indicating basic neuron dynamics prior to our 'emergence' from the waters. The differences are in the huge step 'up' in increase in bandwidth and so increase in complexity - but the core nature is still differentiating/integrating.
FROM that comes a focus on dealing with CONTEXT and from THAT has emerges the COMMUNICATION of that dealing, whether I want to REPLACE or COEXIST with it - this is reflected in emotions in ourselves and other life forms (anger/sex focus on replace, fear/grief focus on coexist)
The univeral nature of the categories derived from differentiating/integrating indicate that other life forms on other planets will make the SAME adaptations - IOW they too will have something like the neuron etc to function.
Chris.
