That's a piece of wisdom that should be elongated. All of
evolution is about bruising designs in the crucible of reality
as measured by survival and production of the next generation.
Without measurement against "actual tasks", there is no
basis for winnowing out "bad" designs from the "good"
ones. Just a lot of opinion among artists.
Methodical process improvement is esential if real long-term
progress is to be made. The use of corpus linguistics is one
encouraging advance, but I would like to know more examples
in linguistic applications if anyone has one they care to share.
Especially if it was iterative, over many generations, rather
than demonstrative of a theory using one generation.
