I use a reasonably well used email system (Lotus Notes) and while it can display Chinese characters, every Unicode character in your message comes out as a square box (or two square boxes for composed characters). It's possible I just need to track down and install some font package, but it's not there by default. As you said, "it is questionable ... if its display will be ... distinguishable" and one square box looks a lot like another.
