Another thought Re: Correction to my last posting Re: dependent and independent intervals, proposal to toss out text2interval. Was re: about emp (was: Motion 42:no)
Again, please excuse me if I am missing the point.
However, if an implementer wanted to provide an extension
while there is a consensus that text2interval should
check the input format carefully to allow, say,
only forms corresponding to floating point
inf-sup or perhaps also mid-rad, couldn't the
implementer provide a function other than
text2interval? However, this brings up the question
of how strongly text strings should be specified, since
valid representations differ between different
higher-level computer languages.
That's just some thoughts, not a strong opinion. In any case,
does someone want to proffer a motion on the subject?

Vincent,
Thank you; that clarifies it (I think). If I understand
you correctly, you are saying that
some of our proposed wording might prohibit certain
possibly desirable extensions.

Quaternion arithmetic would be completely out of the scope of
the standard. Here, the behavior of text2interval is involved.
For instance, if the standard says that the implementation
shall return an error on any string that is not in the specified
format, any extension would be forbidden. A different function
may not be satisfactory. For instance, a user may just need
something like
text2interval(interval2text(x)) contains x
without knowing whether extensions are used internally.
