Motion P1788/M0050:EDP-Without-CA: NO
I vote NO on Motion 50. As I have said repeatedly, there is no point
in requiring an operation (EDP) without also standardizing essential
aspects of the result type, which is different from all other types
described in the standard. And if only the absolute minimum required
for the type to be useful at all is required, namely conversion to
other formats, and exact sums (so one can for example distribute a
computation), it would provide no more than the CDP, the Correctly
Rounded Dot Product.
We do recommend that CA be supported, and provide references for a
common approach, so vendors will (if technology and market conditions
are right) most likely provide a more comprehensive CA environment
than the minimum we might mandate. Yes, it would be nice to have a
complete CA standard -- but this is probably not the right place, at
this (rather late) point in time.
Michel.
