Relation between P1788 and P1788.1

The basic standard was informative part of the draft.
So it was not carefully reviewed. We skipped this in order not to delay
the submission of the 1788 draft. Now the 1788 draft goes its way.
We might review the P1788.1 draft more thoroughly.

What will be relation between 1788 and 1788.1 standards ?
A) They are competitive standards. One of them will win.
B) P1788.1 will be a flavour of 1788.
The text of 1788.1 will not mention flavours,
but we try to review that 1788.1 specification passes all 1788
   requirements to flavour.
C) P1788.1 will be a subset of set-based flavor of P1788.
Conforming P1788.1 implementation might not be conforming P1788 implementation.
Any 754-conforming P1788 implementation is automatically conforming P1788.1 implementation.
Program that uses P1788.1 operations can run on P1788 operations
   with same results.

My preference is (B).

Subject: [P-1788]: Update on status

P-1788 members:

John and the editorial team are almost through the Mandatory
Editorial Coordination (MEC) phase, in which editors look at
the format and style of the document and make suggestions
(some stronger than others). This has resulted in various
changes, but none to the substance of the document. Once
John submits the final document, the sponsor ballot process
will begin.

One change that affects us is separation of the basic standard
from the full standard. Previously, the basic standard was
written as an appendix ("Annex") to the 1788 draft standard.
It will now be a separate document, and a separate, related
standard, labelled 1788.1.

We will also be the working group to finalize the 1788.1 standard.
Since we have previously unanimously approved a draft of 1788
that included the basic standard, I foresee little difficulty
approving the full document for the basic standard without
difficulty. Soon, Ned Nedialkov, primary editor for p-1788.1,
should be submitting the document to us along with a motion
to approve it, to pass it on to the MSC (Microprocessor
Standardization Committee).

Best regards,

Baker
