Correction: Revision PAR for 754 (not 1788)
Sorry: In my last message, it said "revision PAR for 1788;" I
meant "754".

p-1788 members:
The clock is ticking on the IEEE 754 standard for floating
point arithmetic; it becomes inactive in 2018 unless a
revision PAR is submitted and the standard (possibly but
not necessarily revised) goes through the sponsor ballot
process before then. (It will then become IEEE 754-2018).
I have approached some people concerning chairing the
committee and submitting a revision PAR, but have had
no-one strongly volunteer to date.
I note this is an appropriate topic for discussion at
ARITH 22 in Lyon in 3 weeks. However, the next
deadline for PAR submission for consideration by NESCOM
is July 24. I may submit a revision PAR myself before
then, with a committee chair to be transferred to
the person we collectively think is best later.
I do think the revision process is a good one for 754, since
(a) it is a widely used standard; (b) there are issues about
full implementation of various features; and (c) various
features are still controversial, with improvements having been
suggested.
Note the working group chair will need to maintain balance
between academics and manufacturers within the working group,
to assure the (possibly revised) standard both continues to be
relevant to users and widely implemented.
Best regards,
Baker
