It did use FP numbers, but in the IBM S/360 HFP (Hexadecimal) format,
which has an exponent range intermediate between those of IEEE Binary32
and Binary64 (namely roughly 10**-85 to 10**75).  That explains the
shorter Kulisch accumulator.
