Background
AI Offload is a new Study Group within the IEEE 802.11 working group that will investigate MAC technologies to support the offloading of compute intense AI inference tasks to edge AI Wi-Fi Access Points and other Wi-Fi enabled edge compute devices.
The study group has been created in March 2026 and the first meeting was held in May 2026.
Goals
The goal of this IEEE 802.11 Study Group is to produce a PAR and CSD to develop an IEEE802.11 standard to facilitate the offloading of compute intense AI inference tasks to edge AI Wi-Fi Access Points and other Wi-Fi enabled edge compute devices.
