Users and regulatory agencies are concerned about
protecting personal information such as location, movements, contacts and
activities.
IEEE 802.11 is cognisant of these
issues and through this task group will strive to provide enhanced data privacy
for all users.
The Enhanced Data Privacy Task Group came out of a
study group within the IEEE 802.11 working group originally considering the
merits and challenges presented by the privacy-related initiatives behind the
deployment of randomized and changing MAC addresses within 802.11-based
networks that grew to also include other privacy-related concerns.
This amendment specifies modifications to the IEEE Std 802.11 medium access control (MAC) specification to specify new mechanisms that address and improve user privacy.
Users and regulatory agencies are concerned about
protecting personal information such as locations, movements, contacts and
activities, etc. Devices incorporating IEEE Std 802.11 are ubiquitous,
and being compliant with IEEE Std 802.11 does not sufficiently protect
users from user tracking and user profiling attacks.
Work has been done in this area in IEEE Std 802.11aq-2018. To
ensure continued growth and support for IEEE Std 802.11, this project
standardizes user privacy solutions applicable to IEEE Std 802.11.
The group expects to have a participation of about 50 people during the lifetime of the project, which is estimated to finish in September 2025. The group is meeting regularly to progress through the material.
The first goal of TGbi was to identify potential areas of concern and use cases to be addressed. The use cases and issues were documented with doc 11-21-0641. At this time, the group has turned to the development of requirements for technical solutions and recommendations.
The task group welcomes all interested parties from
industry and academia to participate.

Status as of 14 March
2022
The task group has continued to meet regularly. The group has approved the use case and issue
identification for the project. The
group is now accepting and discussing submissions that present requirements to
address the identified use cases and issues.
Technical presentations of proposed requirements are
welcomed.
The task group generally meets every Thursday at
9amET for one hour.
Status as of 24
January 2022
The task group has continued to meet regularly
including at the January Interim session.
The group has completed issue identification and plans to approve the
document summarizing them shortly. The
group is now accepting and discussing submissions that present requirements to
address the identified use cases and issues.
Technical presentations of proposed requirements are
welcomed.
The task group generally meets every Thursday at
9amET for one hour.

October 2021
The task group has continued to meet regularly
including at the September Interim session.
Based on the timeline, the group will begin shifting focus from collecting
use cases and issues, to evaluating the collected use cases and issues with a
goal of completing use case/issue identification by January 2022.
Technical presentations of additional potential
issues or use cases are still accepted.
The task group still generally meets alternate
Thursdays at 9amET.
Status as of 10 August 2021
The task group met
during the July Plenary and continued to discuss use cases and potential
issues. The issues and use cases of interest are being consolidated into
a tracking document, 11-21-641, that can be found on the Mentor Document
server.
Technical presentations of additional potential issues and use cases are still requested.
The task group meets alternate Thursdays at 9amET.
Status as of 09 July 2021
The task group met during the May Interim and continued to discuss use cases and potential issues. The issues and use cases of interest are being consolidated into a tracking document, 11-21-641, that can be found on the Mentor Document server.
The task group will meet three times during the
upcoming July Plenary, and will continue after the
plenary to meet alternate Thursdays at 9amET.
The task group met during the March Plenary. Stephen McCann and Jerome Henry were elected Vice Chairs. Amelia Andersdotter was appointed and confirmed as Secretary. Po-Kai Huang was appointed and confirmed as Technical Editor.
