Dave,

IEEE-SA staff are currently merging
802.16-2004/Cor1 and 802.16e into a single
document. It will be published as IEEE Std
802.16e-2005.

All IEEE standards have the year of approval
incorporated in the title. However, in the case
of an amendment, there is no ambiguity in leaving
out the year. So "IEEE 802.16e" is a perfectly
good abbreviation, since there can never be any
other IEEE 802.16e. Likewise, most people refer
to 802.11b-1999 as 802.11b.

Note that the year IS important when referring to
the base standard. The original IEEE 802.16 was
IEEE 802.16-2001. When we revised it, we
published IEEE 802.16-2004, which superceded the
former version and all of its amendments. If we
finish the next revision in 2009, we will have
IEEE 802.16-2009.

A few people in the press have reported that
802.16e will be published as "802.16-2005". THIS
IS WORONG. There is no such standard, and there
never will be. I've informed reporters who made
this error, and in most cases the errors were
promptly fixed.

Roger
