[802.3_100GNGOPTX] +++ 802.3 WG 2nd RECIRCULATION BALLOT: IEEE P802.3bm 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s Operation Over Fiber Optic Cables D2.2

Dear Colleagues:

This is the announcement of the electronic IEEE 802.3 Working Group 2nd recirculation ballot on the amendment IEEE P802.3bm 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s Operation Over Fiber Optic Cables. Remember that voting, as well as attendance, is a requirement to maintain your IEEE 802.3 member (voter) status. Instructions for accessing the draft, casting your ballot and submitting comments follow this announcement. The ballot group for this draft is the IEEE 802.3 voting membership as of Friday 15th November 2013.

Because this is a recirculation ballot, YOU ONLY NEED TO CAST A BALLOT IF YOU WISH TO CHANGE YOUR VOTE FROM THAT WHICH WAS RECORDED ON THE INITIAL BALLOT OR LAST RECIRCULATION. If you voted previously and your vote has not changed, the last ballot cast will be carried over to this ballot and you do not need to cast a new ballot.

BALLOT SCOPE:
During this IEEE 802.3 Working Group 2nd recirculation ballot, the scope of the ballot is the substantive changes between IEEE P802.3bm/D2.2 and IEEE P802.3bm/D2.1 and the unsatisfied negative comments from the 1st recirculation ballot.

FIVE CRITERIA:
One of the responsibilities as a balloter is to ensure that draft is consistent with the 5 Criteria responses which are available at<http://www.ieee802.org/3/bm/P8023bm_5Criteria_1113.pdf>. An Approve vote indicates your agreement that the draft is consistent with the 5 Criteria responses.

BALLOT OPEN:
Monday 7 April 2014

BALLOT CLOSE:
Tuesday 22 April 2014 23:59 AOE

The Project Authorization Request for this amendment is posted at<http://www.ieee802.org/3/bm/P802.3bm_May2013.pdf> and includes the following:

TITLE:
IEEE Standard for Ethernet Amendment: Physical Layer Specifications and Management Parameters for 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s Operation Over Fiber Optic Cables

SCOPE OF PROJECT:
This project is to specify additions to and appropriate modifications of IEEE Std 802.3 to add 100 Gb/s Physical Layer (PHY) specifications and management parameters, using a four-lane electrical interface for operation on multimode and single-mode fiber optic cables, and to specify optional Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) for 40 Gb/s and 100Gb/s operation over fiber optic cables. In addition, to add 40 Gb/s Physical Layer (PHY) specifications and management parameters for operation on extended reach (>10 km) single-mode fiber optic cables.

NEED FOR THE PROJECT:
Rapid growth of server, network, and internet traffic is driving the need for higher data rates, higher density, lower cost fiber optic solutions, especially in the data center space. Advances in technology now allow the specification of new 100 Gb/s Physical Layer types with reduced lane count, addressing these needs. IEEE Std 802.3 does not currently define a 100 Gb/s four-lane electrical interface between host ICs and optical modules, nor does it define an extended reach solution for 40 Gb/s on single-mode fiber beyond 10 km.

Thank you for your participation in this ballot and careful review of the draft.

T = Technical
TR = Technical Required (a binding comment that is part of a DISAPPROVE vote, therefore only appropriate for an IEEE 802.3 voting member)

1. Prepare your comments in one of the following two ways:

a. You are STRONGLY REQUESTED to use the comment tool at the URL:

<http://www.ieee802.org/3/WG_tools/filemaker/Generic_Commenting_Tool.zip>

To use the tool, extract all components into a folder and do not move any component from that folder as this will cause the executable to not work correctly. The tool is:

Comment_Tool_Generic_Solution.exe

b. To submit comments in text (ASCII) form, please use the form below. This will make it possible for the editor to properly record and track all submissions. Make as many copies of the template as necessary and submit as an ASCII text file or as part of your e-mail.

PLEASE NOTE: The ASCII method involves a manual transcription, hence you are recommended to check your comments to ensure accurate transcription when the comment file is made available. Please use the comment tool above if possible.
