"If the EMS_LM.request is received during idle, the gRS shall insert a control ordered set in place of an IDLE block on the xMII transmit path".
Gary, Viet and I looked closely at your initial contribution regarding the PLS service interface between the MAC and the RS. (www..ieee802.org/3/public/26_03/). After reading it and Clause 81 and Clause 6 again, we understand that the MAC TX does not send "IDLE characters" to the RS. There is "idle time" between packets transmitted by the MAC and "idle time" also when there are no packets for the MAC to transmit. It is the RS that inserts IDLE control characters (in Terminate and Idle control blocks) on the xMII.
The PLS_DATA.request can have one of three values: ONE, ZERO or DATA_COMPLETE. ONE or ZERO represents a single data bit. The DATA_COMPLETE value signifies that the MAC sublayer has no more data to output.
Our understanding is that the value must transition to DATA_COMPLETE at the end of a packet transmission. And the next transition to ONE indicates the start of the next packet (The first bit of the preamble). There are no "IDLE" values transmitted from the MAC to the RS.
Is this correct?
If so, then the statement in 195.4.1.2 ".... received during idle, ..." simply means when the MAC is not transmitting data to the RS.
Thanks,
--- Eugene O.
