[802SEC] FW: Wi-Fi Newsletter: LTE in the 5GHz and Cablecos primetime

Dear EC and RR-TAG,

Just in case you may have missed this 5 GHz piece. Pardon me if this is a repeat of an older article but to me it didn't sound too good for the Wi-Fi sector.

Best regards,

Implications of LTE in the 5 GHz Band

By Maury Wood

Back in December 2013, during a 3GPP Radio Access Network (RAN) plenary meeting, Ericsson and Qualcomm introduced LTE-Unlicensed, a scheme that puts LTE-Advanced signals in the 5 GHz unlicensed UNII band, in conjunction with an LTE “anchor” signal in a licensed band.  The objective is supplemental downlink bandwidth (eventually both supplemental downlink and uplink bandwidth), to help meet ever-expanding mobile broadband data demands.

Cablecos get ready for wireless primetime

By Caroline Gabriel

The disruptive potential of the WiFi-first (and even WiFi-only) models have already been seen in early deployments by start-up MVNOs such as Republic Wireless, and some cable launches on both sides of the Atlantic (Cablevision, Free Mobile in France, Liberty’s Ziggo). There has been a sense, however, that these are the outriders, and behind them are really big cable and telco players, determined to become serious wireless operators in their own right.
