Re: [802SEC] +++10 day ECM (Early Close)+++ Press Release approval motion: IEEE Std 802.11ak-2018 ratification

Dorothy-

I agree with Roger on this, only maybe moreso.
This is a press release for the general public.
In the public vernacular the term "media" and even "link" are not terms that are usually associated with open air or free space
(without regard as to whether they are appropriate terms within the work of the standards group).

I can't think of an easy drop-in replacement term but it deserves thought and serious consideration in the support of clarity.
(Bob Metcalfe used the term Ether when he talked about moving from the free-space network of AlohaNet to a network that utilized the "contained ether" but in this context I don't think that would be an useful alternative)

Best regards,

Geoff

Dorothy,

I vote Approve. While I failed to review the document during pre-circulation, I'd like to offer a few editorial observations:

(1) There are seven uses of the word "media." All of these seem a little unusual to me. This is obviously not the "media" of "media access control," but I'm not sure exactly what it is. Perhaps it would be better to replace the word with "networks", "links", "connections", or something else; probably not the same word in all seven cases.

(2) There is one use of "P802.11" that would be better as just "802.11".

(3) This sentence is confusing, partially because it lacks a verb and partly because it says "media" five times:

"With IEEE 802.11 media operating in the gigabit per second range, and incorporating standardized security and quality of service improvements, a demand for the bridging of IEEE 802.11 media with the same bridging services as other media; as media internal to the network as well as media offering access to the network."

Maybe you could consider something like:

"With IEEE 802.11 links operating in the gigabit per second range, with standardized security and quality of service management, IEEE 802.11ak-2018 will satisfy the demand for IEEE 802.11 links to provide the same bridging services as Ethernet, both internal to the network and at the edge."

Roger
