Hello Edgar: Thanks for your email. Table 1: Energy-Efficiency Criteria for Ac-Ac and
Ac-Dc External Power Supplies in Active Mode: Standard Models
My point is this: There is no Energy Star certification procedure
for a power supply that is capable of providing various output voltages and
therefore no variable output power supply will likely be able to meet current
or future Energy Star requirements unless someone serves as liaison between
UPAMD and Energy Star to develop such a certification procedure. It just may not be possible for UPAMD to operate without
addressing the power supply’s ability to maintain Energy Star requirements,
given my assumption is that variable output power supplies will be the primary
type used with a UPAMD connector. As far as Green Plug goes, we have developed several
technologies that constitute our protected IP that may or may not be
interesting to the UPAMD. Regarding this one issue of energy efficiency, Green
Plug was a participant in the last Energy Star standards process. Energy Star
opted to defer inclusion of variable output power supplies in order to expedite
the completion of Energy Star 2.0. They knew this is a thorny issue – to
develop an agreeable formula characterizing efficiency of a variable output
power supply that is comparable to a fixed-output supply is not
straightforward. While standby power savings and throttling messaging are
great features, I don’t think these things address active mode efficiency
as defined by Energy Star. If this group wishes to continue
discussion on this topic, someone please suggest we add it to the agenda of an
upcoming UPAMD meeting. Thank you. Best regards, Paul (970) 461-3077 Skype: ppanepinto *** Please vote for open systems

[mailto:ebrown@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Edgar Brown Paul, taking a quick look at Green Plug's website it seems that
your company has already addressed many of the issues that this group wants to
address. It would probably help guide the discussion if you could identify
Green Plug's commonality/differences with UPAMD's (still non-approved) goal
set. (i.e., why or why not make Green Plug THE standard and call it a day!!) Edgar On Jul 13, 2010, at 12:11 PM, Paul Panepinto wrote:
Hello: I’ve recently subscribed to
the UPAMD working group. I work for Green Plug, whose mission these past
four years has been to develop a smart DC power interface. It’s
been very interesting reading the topics being discussed and the goals of the group.
As mentioned in previous emails by others, I too am enthusiastic about the work
being done by this group and look forward to its progress. Best regards, Paul A. Panepinto VP Ecosystem Development Green Plug, Inc. |
