Deciding upon priority definition

Hello:

The Communications and Power subgroups have spent a lot of time thinking through priority.  Multiple factors are to be considered during priority policy evaluation. We need to decide upon one of two approaches currently being considered.  We have determined the primary factors to consider in priority resolution include:

            Mission criticality

Requested priority (how urgently the message sender believes his need is)

            Sender device classification

            Stored energy availability.

In one approach, factors are non-overlapping and every factor is either dominant or subordinate to another factor.  The alternative approach has much more overlap and factors are evaluated simultaneously, assigning a weight to each one, and computing an overall score for each device.  The device with the highest overall score is serviced first.

When these factors lead to an inconclusive determination of who should get priority, there is an ultimate priority determination done based upon port address of the connected device.  That might be physical location or it might be user specified; that will be up to the product designer to determine.

Please participate in this week’s Communications and Power Subgroup meetings to give your feedback on which approach you feel is better.  If you cannot attend one of the meetings, please respond via email so we can incorporate your feedback.  Thank you.
