MSC, The Universal Power Adapter for Mobile Devices (P1823) is progressing to possible completion this year. A technical review of the UPAMD/P1823 project can be viewed here. The working group as a whole meets every other week with the sub committees meeting between the main meetings. At the last meeting of the P1823 Working Group, the following requests were approved to be forwarded to the MSC for action. The motions are captured in the minutes of the meeting. 1. Please start the invitation process of develop the sponsor balloting body for the P1823 standard. 2. The Working Group requests a change in the PAR for P1823 to bring it in line with the developing standard. The requested changes to the Scope and Purpose bring the power levels to agree with the committee work and to permit other uses being discussed in committee. Current Scope: The Universal Power Adapter for Mobile Devices (UPAMD) standard defines a power delivery connection between a power adapter and a power using device in the 10 Watt to 130 Watt range. A communications link between the power adapter and the mobile power using device is also defined. The communications may be used to coordinate the power delivery and provide identification between the power adapter and the power using device. While intended for portable computing and entertainment devices, this standard may also be used with other mobile devices in use around the office, home or vehicle. Revised Scope: The Universal Power Adapter for Mobile Devices (UPAMD) standard defines a power delivery connection between a power adapter and a power using device in the 10 Watt to <240 Watt range. A communications link between the power adapter and the mobile power using device is also defined. The communications may be used to coordinate the power delivery and provide identification between the power adapter and the power using device. While intended for portable computing and entertainment devices, power adapters conforming to this standard may also be used with other devices. The current plan is to finish the draft and report it out of the working group in the Q2 (optimistic) or Q3 of this year and move to sponsor ballot. This would target the optimistic completion at the December RevCom/SASB meeting. The above changes need to be approved through the NesCom/SASB prior to the sponsor ballot. This would be need to be approved by the MSC at the upcoming April 9 meeting and NesCom at the June 2012 meeting. The SAE and USCAR have shown interest in this standard for vehicular use and are defining a group within the SAE to work with UPAMD. UPAMD has also had input from ECOVA with respect to the California CEC requirements and the upcoming DOE requirements. The DOE mentions the EPS and using devices that communicate before and during power delivery. This is new class of device and the details were not present in the current material. This is definitely a developing area with different rules than the current DOE rules.
