Subject: Invitation to Ballot, P1823

***** SPONSOR BALLOT INVITATION *****

You have indicated an interest in balloting IEEE Standards documents.

IMPORTANT! To participate, you must have access to myProject through an IEEE Web Account.

If you would like to participate in IEEE Standards Sponsor Ballot

P1823

Title: Standard for a Universal Power Adapter for Mobile Devices you must enroll as a member of the ballot group by 31-May-2012, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

***** IEEE STANDARD DOCUMENT INFORMATION ***** The IEEE Computer Society Society/Standard for a Universal Power Adapter for Mobile Devices invites you to participate in the New Sponsor Ballot for:

P1823

Title: Standard for a Universal Power Adapter for Mobile Devices

Scope: The Universal Power Adapter for Mobile Devices (UPAMD) standard defines a power delivery connection between a power adapter and a power using device in the 10 Watt to 130 Watt range. A communications link between the power adapter and the mobile power using device is also defined. The communications may be used to coordinate the power delivery and provide identification between the power adapter and the power using device. While intended for portable computing and entertainment devices, this standard may also be used with other mobile devices in use around the office, home or vehicle.

Purpose: The UPAMD standard creates a common interconnect for power delivery in the 10W to 130W power range to portable and fixed devices. This standard supports more universal use and reuse of power adapters replacing brand specific and model specific power adapters. The UPAMD adapter system may be usable in portable computing and entertainment systems, security, household and office equipment within the power range. Universality and reuse are among the primary driving factors. Communications may support the adaption of the powered device performance to the power available.

***** MESSAGE FROM THE WORKING GROUP CHAIR *****

Potential Sponsor Ballot members;

This is an exciting standard that will affect most of the portable, mobile, electronic equipment in use today.  It will turn power adapters into durable goods that will be used for generations of equipment and possibly users. An overview of the current state of the draft is available at http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/msc/upamd/pub_docs/TBD.pdf.

Please consider if you have the time, and expertise, to review this project and cast your vote and comments. We must have a 75% return from the ballot pool for the vote to be valid.  The ballot will also be invalid if 30% of the balloter returns an abstention, for lack of time or expertise.  A failed ballot for these reasons will require the ballot pool to be reformed and the ballot restarted, delaying the project for up to 6 months.

The list of interest categories for the ballot has been expanded. Please look at the list and determine which category best represents your relationship to this project.  The ballot pool is invalid if more than one-third (1/3) of the balloters are from a single interest category.

Please also note that you can submit comments against the draft without being on the balloting body. All comments must be recorded, tracked, and responded to in the same manner whether a member of the balloting body or an interested party.  Comments may be sent to the Working Group Chair or the Sponsor Chair. Contact information is needed for each comment so it can be responded to.

If you know of someone with a material interest in this standard that may not have received this invitation, please forward this invitation to them.

Respectfully,

Bob Davis, Chair P1823 Working Group

OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF BALLOTERS ============================================

Balloting group members have an obligation to respond during the balloting period; failure to return a ballot may disqualify the balloter from participation in future balloting groups.

Once the document is ready to be balloted, you will receive notification via email.  You will typically have 30 days to review the document and return the ballot with your vote.  By agreeing to participate in this ballot you have an *obligation* to respond.  Failure to return a completed ballot may disqualify you from participating in future ballots.

Thank you for your interest in this ballot.

Note that the changes in the scope and purpose shown here represent those currently approved by the NesCom/SASB.  The PAR revision will be presented at the JUNE NesCom and SASB meeting for approval.  The approved version will then appear on the actual ballot.
