The IEEE SA Standards Board Patent Committee (PatCom) Administrator recently received a comment from a Working Group about the Patent Slides for Standards Development Meetings. The comment was in regards to the use of the ellipsis in the bullet point 'Don't be silent if inappropriate topics are discussed ... do formally object.' in the 'Other guidelines for IEEE WG meetings' slide. In summary, the comment was that the use of the ellipsis seemed unconventional, as an ellipsis is generally used to express the passage of time, especially when the period of time involved is indefinite, yet objection to inappropriate discussion requires immediate action.
This comment made it apparent that the use of the ellipsis in this bullet point may not be the clearest way to communicate the intent, particularly to participants for whom English is a second language. As a result, an editorial change has been made to this bullet point in both the 'Patent Slides for Standards Development Meetings' and the 'Patent Slides for Pre-PAR Meetings'. The updated text, which has been approved by PatCom, is 'Don't be silent if inappropriate topics are discussed. Formally object to the discussion immediately.'. In addition, 'IEEE-SA' has been updated to 'IEEE SA' in these slide sets.
The slide sets can be accessed at https://standards.ieee.org/about/sasb/patcom/materials.html.
Thanks and best regards,
David Law, PatCom Chair
