P-1788 activity summary Re: MSC October 11 Meeting reminder. 10AM Pacific.
MSC, P-1788:
Here is a short summary of activity during the quarter:
1. There have been extensive, at times somewhat heated email discussions during the
quarter, but measurable progress has been made towards resolving the important
issues, and the character of the actual standards document is gradually taking
shape. Juergen Wolff von Gudenberg has maintained a list of motions, supporting
documents, and status at

2. Nathalie Revol, our elected chair, has just finished doing an excellent
job of organizing and hosting SCAN 2010, the main biennial conference for
experts in interval computations, at Lyon, France. We held an in-person
P-1788 meeting there, with minutes taken by Guillaume Melquiond and with
roughly 30 attendees. Although formal business was not conducted
(we conduct formal business by email to allow maximum participation),
the meeting served to focus our efforts and better delineate our mission
or raison d'etre. A highlight was Juergen's review of the completed
and active motions, motion by motion. Evgenija Popova pointed out
IEEE's new copyright policy for standards body participants, something
of interest to our many participants from academia. I briefly reviewed the
steps and procedures (working group, sponsor ballot, etc.) that are followed
for an actual standard to come into existence.
Best regards,
Baker
