Normally the mailer should do that automatically for you.

The entire reference chain is better in case some messages are missing.

For individual posts, headers can matter (in particular all those
Received headers), but for the global mailing-list, I'd say that
most space is taken by PDF attachments (in particular if compression
is used, as plain text can be compressed better than usual PDF).
