Background

LRLP  is a new topic interest group within the IEEE 802.11 working group that will address the needs of M2M, IoT, Energy Management, and Sensor applications. LRLP is intended to leverage the mass-market WLAN infrastructure for reliable, consistent, and stable access to Internet and “Cloud” services.

Goals

The Long Range Low Power (LRLP) Topic Interest Group (TIG) met for the first time at the September 2015 (Bangkok) session of 802.11.
The LRLP TIG will accomplish the following tasks:

The LRLP TIG is planning to complete these tasks and generate a report within four 802.11 sessions. (At the March 2016 session)

March 2016

At the March meeting, additional contributions were presented, and the TIG incorporated input from the contributions  development of the output report: "Long Range Low Power (LRLP) Operation in 802.11: Use Cases and Functional, which was updated to revision 12 in document 11-15-1446r12.

There was lack of consensus and agreement on LRLP direction to proceed to a SG at this meeting. Since the TIG has met for 6 months, which was the planned duration of the activity, a straw poll was taken to determine the TIG member's interest in extending the TIG. The straw poll result was 52 for, 10 agains, and 14 abstaining.

In the May meeting the TIG will focus on clarifying the scope of LRLP by developing  list of key differentiators, and seeking agreement on those key differentiators.

Contributions

January 2016

At the January meeting, additional presentations on use cases, feasibilitiy, and design criteria were given.
The TIG continued development of the output report: "Long Range Low Power (LRLP) Operation in 802.11: Use Cases and Functional Requirements: Guidelines for PAR Development"
The document number is 11-15-1446. As of this posting the latest version is document 11-15-1446r6.

The closing report for the meeting is available in 11-16-0191r0. The minutes are in document 11-16-0199r0.

Contributions

The TIG has established two ad-hoc editing groups for developing the draft.
  1. LRLP use cases and metrics and LRLP requirements. Ad Hoc Lead – Chitto Ghosh.
  2. Technical feasibility  and Technical material needed to initiate standardization. Ad Hoc Lead – Michael Fischer.

The Ad Hoc editing groups will hold two teleconferences (one each) on December 8th and 9th, at 11:00 EST. Details are found on the 802.11 administrative calendar. Conference Bridge:

The Call for Contributions for the LRLP TIG remains open. Specific topics include coexistence, quanitification of use cases, and mapping use cases to requirements.

The next meeting of the LRLP TIG: IEEE 802 March 2016 Plenary Session: Sunday March 13th through Friday March 18th, 2016, Sands Venetian Macao Hotel, Macao

November 2015

At the November meeting, additional presentations on use cases, feasibilitiy, and design criteria were given.
The TIG continued development of the output report: "Long Range Low Power (LRLP) Operation in 802.11: Use Cases and Functional Requirements: Guidelines for PAR Development"
The outline has progressed to an initial draft, available in document 11-15-1446r0.

The closing report for the meeting is available in 11-15-1447r0. The minutes are in document 11-15-1390r0.

September 2015  (First Meeting of LRLP TIG)

At the September meeting, the LRLP TIG heard several presentations on use cases, feasibilitiy, and design criteria. The TIG started developing the output report: "Long Range Low Power (LRLP) Operation in 802.11: Use Cases and Functional Requirements: Guidelines for PAR Development"
The draft outline is available in document 11-15-1181r1.

The closing report for the meeting is available in 11-15-1191r1.

Contributions

The Call for Contributions for the LRLP TIG remains open. Contributions addressing LRLP requirements, use cases, and technical feasibility are requested for presentation at the next meeting of the LRLP TIG:  November 8-13, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas, Texas USA.

July 2015  (Presentation in WNG)
