[STDS-802-11-ARC] Discussion Thread for IEEE Std 802 Amendment PAR/Nendica ELLA discussions

--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 ARC Reflector ---

This discussion thread is to determine if 802.11 members are ok with the proposed enhancements and additional content in the proposed draft IEEE Std 802 PAR and CSD.

IEEE Std 802 currently does not contain much actual architecture and is basically an overview specification, however there are proposals to add architecture content into the standard and the addition of this content may impact IEEE Std 802.11.  It is my belief that 802.11 should contribute to this PAR/CSD development to:

  • Ensure that any architectural changes to IEEE Std 802 do not negatively impact IEEE Std 802.11
  • That IEEE Std 802.11 is "supported" by IEEE Std 802
  • That IEEE Std 802.11 "works" with the other 802 LMSC standards (IEEE Std 802, IEEE Std 802.1, IEEE Std 802.3 ....)

If you are interested in this activity, please take some time to review the current PAR/CSD text (link below) and provide your feedback to this thread.

I will be sending updates to this thread as the PAR and CSD develop.

Background and Information:

During the 11 May 2022 ARC SC meeting the status of the IEEE Std 802 Amendment PAR development was reviewed (https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/22/11-22-0705-02-0000-ieee-std-802-nendica-discussion-update.ppt) - note this status was also provided during the Wireless Chairs Opening Plenary (6 May 2022) and the 802.11 WG Opening Plenary (9 May 2022)

IEEE Std 802 is the “IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks: Overview and Architecture” and the PAR/CSD are being developed to: “to enhance the standard" and add technical content.

Note to start an 802 LMSC standards project a PAR (Project Authorization Request) and a CSD (Criteria for Standards Development) must be developed and approved.  See:

IEEE 802 LMSC Operations Manual  clause 9 and 14, respectively.

The current target schedule for the PAR and CSD development is:  802 LMSC approval during the November 2022 plenary, and SASB approval December 2022

The effort to develop the PAR and CSD has been assigned to Nendica (IEEE 802 “Network Enhancements for the Next Decade” Industry Connections Activity, under 802.1).  Nendica has started the ELLA (Evolved Link Layer Architecture) activity to do this work.  The working text for the PAR and CSD are in the Draft ELLA Report on Amendment of IEEE Std 802 (802.1-21-0080) page 7-12 for the PAR, page 13-19 for the CSD.  This text is still under development and will probably change before the PAR and CSD are approved.  An overview of the ELLA activity and related contributions can be found at https://1.ieee802.org/nendica-ella/.

Also of potential interest are several "open" issues:

  1. Do VLANs belong in the 802 Architecture
  2. Is LLC needed in the 802 Architecture
  3. How are arbitrarily stacked tags described
  4. How are isolating and non-isolating tags described
