[802.3_SPMD] 802.3da Externally Defined MPI types

Folks,

As you may remember, in my “MPoE: Multiple MPIs per DTE” presentation/comments/proposed baseline from New Orleans, I initially included additional system types for AC, DC and FMP. During the meeting it became clear that the group would not adopt this section of the text, and so I removed it from the text that was eventually adopted (https://www.ieee802.org/3/da/public/0525/jones_3da_01d_may_2025.pdf) .

Side discussions suggested there may be a cleaner way to achieve the same goals.

I’ve been working on a new proposal which has buy in from some of the individuals who were opposed to specifically including AC, DC and FMP, and I think the result is better that what I had proposed in New Orleans.

The basic approach to support LLDP negotiation and Clause 30 reporting for “Externally Defined MPI Types”. This is a 32-bit field that is expected to contain 24-bit OUI/CID and 8-bit MPI subtype. The MPoE LLDP negotiation treats this as an opaque 32-bit field. A given organization, e.g., ODVA, can obtain a CID(https://standards.ieee.org/products-programs/regauth/cid/) for $800 and then assign subtypes as needed.

I’ve reused as much as possible of the current clause 30 & clause 79 text, with changes/additions as needed. I’ve requested time to discuss this in Madrid before D3.0. I intend to submit comments for this in D3.0.

I’ve attached an overview presentation and a detailed writeup so those who are interested can get a head start.

Regards,

Peter
