[802.3_DIALOG] IEEE 802.3 July 2022 plenary session update and agendas

Dear Colleagues,

As already announced <https://www.ieee802.org/3/email_dialog/msg01341.html>, IEEE 802.3 will hold its July 2022 plenary session from Monday 11 July 2022 through Thursday 14 July 2022. The plenary session will be held at Le Centre Sheraton Montreal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada with support for mixed mode (i.e., remote attendance). Please note that the meetings are being planned around an in-person schedule, with remote access provided on a best-effort basis.

The IEEE 802.3 Working Group (WG) opening plenary meeting will begin at 10h00 ET on Monday 11 July 2022, and the IEEE 802.3 WG closing plenary meeting will begin at 13h00 ET on Thursday 14 July 2022. Task Force (TF) standing committee and any appropriate ad hoc meetings will be scheduled between the opening and closing IEEE 802.3 meetings, the IEEE 802.3 plenary meeting schedule can be accessed at <https://www.ieee802.org/3/interims/July%20IEEE%20802.3%20Plenary%20Meetings%20(June%206,%202022).pdf>. Payment of a registration fee is required by anyone that attends any meeting held during this plenary session. The registration website can be accessed at <https://cvent.me/yG5GY2>

The draft agendas, as well as liaison letters received so far, are available in the minutes area <https://ieee802.org/3/minutes/jul22/index.html> and will be updated as required prior to the meeting. The agenda will be approved at the meeting.

We will gather two records of attendance: [1] the attendance tracking tool; and [2] attendance books in each meeting along with the teleconference tool attendance. The attendance tool will be the only official record of attendance for building and maintaining WG membership. The meeting attendance books along with the teleconference tool attendance will be used to record the attendance in the minutes for each meeting and it is important that you review these minutes to make sure your attendance is recorded correctly as this will be the backup should there be an issue with the attendance tool.

Attendance credit toward membership requires attendance at three of the four days of the IEEE 802.3 session, independent of how long a particular subgroup might be meeting. The attendance tracking tool will only allow sign in on Monday at the opening IEEE 802.3 plenary and on Thursday at the closing IEEE 802.3 plenary meeting (not during the Monday afternoon or Thursday morning meetings). Several WG decisions are expected during the IEEE 802.3 meetings (most during the Thursday 14 July 2022 Closing plenary meetings). Depending on the amount of discussion, IEEE 802.3 WG meetings may run beyond their target ending times, so please plan your time accordingly.

Greater than 50 Gb/s Bidirectional Optical Access PHYs call for interest
-----------------------------------

CFI page: <http://www.ieee802.org/3/cfi/request_0722_1.html>

The following request for agenda time for a Greater than 50 Gb/s Bidirectional Optical Access PHYs call for interest has been received from Frank Effenberger.

----

In the past, the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group has standardized bidirectional optical PHYs at speeds ranging from 100 Mb/s to 50 Gb/s over one single mode fiber, that are intended for optical access applications. Due to the growth of bandwidth demand, there is now a need for similar systems that run at higher speeds over the same fiber connections. This Call for Interest is to assess the support for the formation of a study group to explore the development of these higher speed bidirectional PHYs.

----

The call for interest will take place during the IEEE 802.3 Opening Plenary on the morning of Monday 11th July. A call for interest consensus building meeting has been scheduled to occur from 20h00 ET to 21h30 ET on the evening of Tuesday 12th July. The vote to determine if a Study Group will be formed will take place at the IEEE 802.3 Closing Plenary on the afternoon of Thursday 14th July.

IEEE 802 Tutorials
==================

Subject: IEEE 802 Technical Plenary
Date: Monday 11 July 2022
Time: 18h00 ET to 20h00 ET

Abstract: This request is to use the first tutorial slot for the 802 Technical Plenary. The goal is to facilitate a broader 802 architecture discussion that can be used as input to the EC workshop topic on “802 Architecture and Technical Coherence” after the plenary. The agenda would comprise of a level-set so that we understand the architecture from the perspective of the 802 WGs. Each WG would be asked to present a few slides to indicate their standard’s architecture, where it is defined, and what they understand their relationship is to IEEE Std 802 Overview and Architecture. Such a discussion would help identify where the current commonalities are and can help us then move into an informed discussion of an amendment for the reorganization of Std 802 and for an EC discussion. The agenda would conclude with a summary of the IEEE Std 802 revision project and the plan for its completion.
