IEEE 802 Interim Meeting in Singapore
Joseph
I was just in Singapore last week and filed the report below. We
continue to monitor the situation and nothing substantive has changed.
The "in particular" phrase you used, I would have expected to apply
to southern China, Hong Kong, and Viet Nam, but not Singapore. Singapore
is like the US and Canada in that it is dealing with returning travelers
from Viet Nam, China and HK. but seems to have the situation well
contained. According to WHO, cases have been limited to immediate family
members in sustained contact with infected individuals and health care
providers. To quote from a press briefing dated Saturday, the 22nd:
Dr Max Hardiman: The WHO travel advisory issued last Saturday was based on a
risk assessment and the quality of the cases being described and located within
hospitals. Other than health care workers and their families, there is no
transmission going on in communities to which travellers may become exposed.
That is why we have reviewed the new information and the WHO advice stills stands:
no restriction on travel is recommended.
There have been no reported issues with the general population in Singapore.
Given those circumstances, the meeting is still a go in Singapore, but we will
continue to monitor and advise should the situation change. Hope to see
you there
Bob
----------------------
If it is a comfort to anyone, I met with the Singapore government Tuesday
afternoon and I am told there have been no indigenous outbreaks of SARS in Singapore.
The cases reported came from a person coming into the country and causing a
localized outbreak among the hospital care givers. The government is
taking all precaution to insure the safety of the population as only the Singapore
government can. The situation here is apparently no different than the
situation in Vancouver or Toronto (and possibly NYC). For those of you
who have never been to Singapore before, it is an ultra modern, ultra clean,
garden like city located on an island. The risk is probably no greater
here than it was in Dallas or anyplace where there is a multi-national
gathering. I have been promised regular updates.
I think we need to monitor the situation closely, but based on my first hand
experience here, I think it is premature to hit the panic button. Stuart and I
have talked and see no reason not to go ahead with the meeting. Without a major
change in the seriousness of the situation, we have no basis to cancel or
postpone the meeting, just based on the fear of the unknown factor, without
triggering disastrous penalties. If the situation changes, we will then have
the opportunity to postpone. In the meantime, we will keep you advised
but encourage you to proceed with making your plans to attend. Believe me when
I say that none of us is willing to play cowboy and expose ourselves to
unnecessary risk. As the situation stands now and from what I can see
here, there is no reason we can not have a safe and productive meeting in a
country that is very wireless friendly and very excited to host this event.

802 Interim Meeting in Singapore
Hi All:
Given the health danger from SARS for people visiting Asia (and in particular Singapore), I request that the
IEEE802 interim meetings planned for Singapore either be moved to a different location or cancelled. We
should not provide a mechanism to spread this disease by visiting Singapore then returning home as
carriers.
