[802-20-GENERAL:] Streaming and Conversational Video in 3G Wireless Standards

All,

The following information is provided to the 802.20 WG as FYI. It is intended to provide references required in section 4.3.8 of the 802.20 EC document (v12).

Regards,

Dan

3GPP and 3GPP2 have adopted ITU H.324M Recommendation as the protocol for 3G conversational video-telephony. It is commonly referred to as 3G-324M.

The umbrella standard includes specific ITU Recommendations for audio, video and control:

Audio: G.722.2 (AMR-WB), G.723.1

Video: MPEG-4 (ISO/IEC 14496) (including H.261 and H.263 video codecs, but not the newer H.264 codec)

Control: H.223 A/B, H.245

G.722.2 generates speech coding at five rates (in kbps):  6.60, 8.85, 12.65, 15.85, 23.85

G.723.1 is a 3.4 kHz speech codec and generates data at rates of 5.3 and 6.4 kbps.

H.261 is a video codec that generates data at p*64 kbps

H.263 is a video codec that can generate data rates from below 64 kbps up to 2 Mbps.

H.264/AVC is a new video codec in cooperation with ISO (JVT) and is included in Part 10 of the ISO MPEG-4 standard. H.264 includes major improvements over H.261 and H.263 and is more robust in wireless mobile environments.

H.223 A/B is a multiplexing (audio, video, data) protocol for low bit rate multimedia packet switched communications. Extensions A and B were developed for error-prone mobile wireless environments.

H.245 is the control protocol for H.323 and H.324 IP multimedia systems.
