Re: [802SEC] Indemnification memo

Paul,

While I am now just a voice from the past and I do not know the
motivation for sending this letter at this particular time, I really
feel that the letter glosses over the difficult realities and
uncertainty of IEEE indemnification. I see no indication that the
ambiguities I faced several years ago have been dealt with.

Since virtually no 802 attendees do so on there own dime, and I am sure
that a large number have stock and/or stock options from the
organization sending them, it is rather likely that there are few who
could claim to have no financial interest is the outcome of some 802 decisions.

And there is the issue raised several years ago as to whether IEEE
indemnification would be withdrawn if the case became very expensive.
As I am sure you well know, a common legal tactic for those with deep
pockets is too simply financially drain their advesary with legal fees.
And I find it hard to imagine that the IEEE would risk financial
disaster to provide indemnification if a case became too expensive.

I think that 802 attendees would be well severed if 802 suggested that
they determine whether those that pay their way would provide
indemnification if it was needed.

Best regards,

Bill

As you are all aware, this is an important subject that all members should be aware of. If there are any questions, I will attempt address them directly or solicit input from the appropriate legal resources in the IEEE SA.
