Sub Committee Reflectors

Group

There are now four new reflectors under the UPAMD group.

Upamd-power@xxxxxxxx for the power discussions and spec development.  The power subcommittee will be chaired by Paul Panepinto.

Upamd-connect@xxxxxxxx for the connector discussions and spec development. The connector subcommittee will be chaired by Mark Anderson

Upamd-comms@xxxxxxxx for the communications discussions and spec development. The communication subcommittee will be chaired by Edgar Brown

Upamd-conform@xxxxxxxx for the conformity/validation/certification discussion and spec development. Still looking for a chair for this subcommittee.

All of these reflectors will be archived in the private page section of the website.

Each of the subcommittee reflectors can be joined in the same way as the main reflector with email to listserv@xxxxxxxx with the line “subscribe upamd-power your-first-name your-last-name” with the subcommittee of your choice instead of power. I did it with four lines in one email.

The purpose of the additional reflectors is to keep that topic specific traffic off the main reflector.  The Chairs of the subcommittees will probably start by cleaning up the goals for the group to have a target list of must satisfy issues and may satisfy issues.  Then the solutions can be solicited, modified an worked on until a decision is reached and reported to the main committee.

The general goals have been established by vote of the entire committee and the relevant ones to each subcommittee should be on the must satisfy list.

There should be interesting and lively discussions.  With the superb talent working on this project I expect expertise and innovation will produce results that we will all feel comfortable living with the results daily over the next decade +.   None of us can know the future precisely but we can track rates of change in the technology and markets and make educated guesses where developments are headed. This standard should be ahead of the market when it completes next year, on market five years later, and needing a refresh as behind market in 10 years. The communications capabilities built into this standard will be a major key to that long life.

As the adapters and cables are expected to last for ~10 years, any ROI calculations have a much longer payback time, unlike the pile of still working but unusable adapters under the corner of my desk for equipment that has either died or been superseded. Their mean useful life was probably 3 years – we can do better.

A well working example of the kinds of connections to be considered is the USB system.  USB supports connections for device - device, device – hub –devices, sometimes multiple hubs in a tree, multiple ports from a device, multiple ports from an adapter, etc. The power networks can be almost as complicated and should not be disallowed.  I will look for the selection of UPAMD cables next to the USB cables.  USB has also survived through 4 generations of enhancements with backward compatibility.

Now --- How do we do it?

Respectfully;

Bob Davis
