stds-802-mobility: RE: Singapore Meeting

Bob,

The CDC is now advising US citizens to delay travel to Singapore.  I think the IEEE needs to take tough steps to help contain the spread as well.

Given the sustained close proximity apparently required for transmission, that makes a lot of sense.  Keeps a kid who may have had sustained contact away from other kids where sustained contact can happen.  That is why I like Singapore.  They take the tough steps which will keep it contained. Given measures like that, I remain optimistic.

Yes we are. The meeting remains a go.  China is the hot spot not Singapore.  Right now Singapore is no different than Canada and the US. The Singapore authorities seem to have things well in hand.  I was there last week, one of our other chairs is there this week and has been sending back very positive reports, and I will be back again the week after next.  Barring a major change, such as WHO or CDC issuing a travel restriction, there are no plans to postpone or move the meeting.

Right now CDC is suggesting people consider postponing nonessential travel to Hong Kong, SAR, and Guangdong Province.  Singapore is not on that list and at this time there are no travel restrictions in place that are directly related to SARS there or anywhere else. According to the FAQ sheets, available data indicate that transmission seems to require direct or close contact. Cases have occurred among health care workers caring for ill patients and close family contacts, but not the general population.

So bottom line, we forge ahead, but we will continue to monitor the situation closely.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

Bob

Hi Bob:

Given the SARS health issue and its connection to Singapore, are we still planning to have an interim meeting there in May?
