RE: UPAMD Working Group Ballot on UPAMD_P1823Draft_201208290000vote.pdf

Dear Colleagues,

I vote to approve the draft of IEEE Standard 1823, and offer the following comments. The page numbers refer to the pages in the PDF; the page numbers at the bottom of the page are approximately 11 numbers less in the body of the document.

  1. On page 6 (vi), line 42, working group member’s name ZHANG should not be in solid capital letters – show as Zhang.
  2. On page 13 (2), goal i), insert a period and a space after “or both”. I would prefer to split this into two goals, making the second sentence a separate goal.
  3. On page 43, insert a page break before Figure 8-3 so it stays with its caption. There is a more sophisticated “keep together” paragraph formatting that would accomplish this more elegantly, but I’m not sure of the details.
  4. On page 45, line 20, item e) is blank. I presume a definition of Byte5 as “Allocated Voltage AV” is intended.
  5. On page 47, lines 36 thru 41, add a question mark at the end of each item before “1 = Yes”, and add “0 = No” after.
  6. On page 49, lines 23 thru 25, add a question mark at the end of each item before “1 = Yes”, and add “0 = No” after.
  7. Beginning on page 49, line 29, section 8.4.1 “Device Certification Reference Number” should be removed entirely. We voted not to create a certification process and if a subsequent revision of this Standard does so those authors should not be constrained in developing this field.
  8. Beginning on page 50, line 9, section 8.4.2 “Extended Unique Identifier Message” should be removed entirely for the same reasons.
  9. On page 71, insert a page break before line 29 so the heading of Section 9.9.3, Figure 9-17, and its caption stay together.
  10. On page 74, the cells in the second row, last five columns (reading 8, 3, 3, 4, 4 respectively) are styled as headers. As a result they show up as numbered items in the table of contents. Their style should be changed to “Body” and the table of contents redone to eliminate them.
  11. On page 86, line 21, change “dominate” to “dominates” (subject / verb agreement).
  12. Beginning on page 115, line 1, remove section B.6, “Standard designed to support Certification testing of adapter, device and cable” entirely, for the same reasons as items 7 and 8.

Most of these were included in my comments prior to the meeting of August 28, and I regret that I could not get on in time to discuss them at that time. Perhaps there is an explanation for including sections pertaining to a certification process (items 7, 8, 12) and if so, I look forward to hearing it. The others are simply editorial and hopefully the IEEE-SA staff will pick them up if we fail to do so, but I would urge that we streamline the process as much as possible.

Best regards,

Alex Schneider

Subject: UPAMD Working Group Ballot on UPAMD_P1823Draft_201208290000vote.pdf

UPAMD,

This is the start of the Working Group Ballot for the Draft of the UPAMD Standard.

The draft document is on the UPAMD website as http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/msc/upamd/private/UPAMDDrafts/UPAMD_P1823Draft_201208290000vote.pdf.

The following rules will be used for this Working Group Ballot.

Members with Voting Membership status, as tabulated in http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/msc/upamd/private/ MemberList20120828.xls, may:
1.             Vote to Approve the Draft, with or without Comments.
2.             Vote to Disapprove the Draft with comments specifying the changes required in the draft, with necessary text, to change their vote from Disapprove to Approve.

Other members of the UPAMD working group, and any other interested party, may submit comments against the draft that will be addressed by the working group.

All voting, and comment responses, are to be submitted to upamd-vote@xxxxxxxx where they will be archived and available to all members.

Please send your responses in time for review at the 11 September Working group meeting.

Overview and Status of the Working Group can be found at http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/msc/upamd/pub_docs/TBD.pdf.  This is updated as changes are made.

When consensus is achieved on the Draft,  a vote to report the Draft for Sponsor Ballot will be needed.  That ballot requires a 2/3 majority approval of the Voting Members.

Respectfully;

Bob Davis
