I think it all depends on where you search from, from more British-English countries, it is more geared towards place, for US position. I just checked, "unit in the last position" 417 million results, "unit in the last place" 145 million results

Strange!
Google gives me "About 5,800,000 results" for "unit in the last place"
and "About 2,600,000 results" for "unit in the last position".
Can you recheck your search.
I have almost always seen it and heard it as place not position.
